enrolled after receiving 12 hours of instruction. The state requires that upon intake each student be administered an approved pretest. After approximately 50 hours of instruction, a posttest must be administered. Also, the state requires that we provide an average of 50 instructional hours per enrolled student. A student is then considered to be retained.
Last year, LCN met two of the four state standards, which was an improvement over the prior year. We are still striving to improve in the following areas: Pre-post testing and Student Retention (see attached performance results). Our main focus for improvement in these areas is to keep students in our program long enough to administer a posttest and measure educational gains.
While realizing that we cannot control many of the obstacles that prevent students from continuing in our program, tutors can have a great impact on student retention. Provide fun and interesting lessons for your student. Focus on their goals and areas of interest and relevance to them.
Please contact the office for any support you may need and keep up the good work!

One of my favorite events during the year is the potluck International dinner, which will be held on November 29th. Our evening ESL students are there for a class, so many attend the dinner. We very much would like tutors and their students to attend. This is an opportunity for students, teachers, tutors, board members and our staff to meet together and share food from the different countries of our students as well as favorite American dishes. Last year we had seventeen countries represented, including the United States. This is an opportunity to acknowledge our students. If you have a student who you would like to have acknowledged with a certificate, please let the office know. A student can be complimented for diligence, effort, progress, or even the number of sessions attended. Last year, several tutors came with their students, and when we were introducing ourselves, they were overlooked. Some students are shy about “going public”. This is particularly true of basic literacy students. If they are shy and would prefer not to introduce themselves, please let us know, but don’t let that discourage them from attending. Our goal is to have as many people associated with LCN enjoy this evening.
Finally, I want to let all of you who are tutors, and others who help us fulfill our mission, to know how much we appreciate your contributions. We know what a big time and energy commitment is involved in your work with LCN. The literacy movement depends on volunteers to perform ninety percent of the work to provide services to our students. Without your services, many people could not be helped.
