Vietnamese New Year

The new year is on January 29 this year. We have a three day new year. We make many foods. We eat dried fruit. We put flowers in homes. We have rice and meat and beans. They are a special food. And a special fruit we eat on New Years is Watermelon. We put flowers in my house. The first day of New Year we go visit my grandparents and they give me red envelops. Inside is money. This is lucky money. We have a big family reunion. We have a big feast. We can go somewhere to play games. We have a long time for holiday. In Ho Chi Minh New Year we have special flowers. It's name is Mai Vang. It has five petals. It is small and they have many many flowers together. Before the 15th day, we take the leaves out and the flowers bloom on New Years Day. The flowers smell good, but not too strong.

What the Literacy Council of Norristown Has Done For Me
I have been learning English at the Norristown Literacy Council since November 2002.
I feel that my writing skills and comprehension of the English language are improving. This makes me feel confident, proud and comfortable when I write or listen to others speaking. I'm aware when I have to speak because I'm not fluent.
My English vocabulary does not come out when I am speaking. Therefore, I know that I need to work hard on it.
I really appreciate and am grateful for the help and the time that I receive from my tutor.
I appreciate also the arrangements and provisions from the Literacy Council to me; such as the books, paper and more.
Thank you very much.

Thanks - Norristown Literacy Council members and Thank you - Nancy
As a foreigner, English is always a big barrier in order to survive and live well here in the United Sates. I had the same difficulty and felt frustration until last year when one of my Chinese friends who was a student of Norristown Literacy Council suggested me to seek help from NLC.
I still remember clearly one night last Feb. when I first went to NLC. The coordinator - Maria asked me some questions carefully and friendly before giving me an individual English test. She and other members of NLC tried very hard in order to find a good tutor for me. Finally, Nancy Root who volunteered to work for NLC accepted it to be my one-to-one tutor. I think it's my fortunate! Starts last April, Nancy spends a night every week with me at the Lansdale library, no matter how bad the weather is and how busy her work is, teaching me English including grammar, idioms, and reading skills that are the weakest aspects of my English. We follow the excellent textbooks one chapter at a time that NLC members chose especially for me. Nancy is very patient, responsive, earnest, and skillful in teaching me about the difficult language with her well-educated background. In addition, she does her best to help me not only in English but also in any difficulties I meet. That's the reason I would like to share all good and bad things happened during my daily life with her. She is always willing to give me beneficial advice to help me in dealing with different kinds of situations. More importantly, she is happy for whatever achievements I made and encourages me to look forward. I will never forget how proud she appeared when she heard that I became an U.S. citizen last Nov.! So, for most of time, I feel Nancy and I are not pure student-teacher relationship; she is more like a mentor, a friend, and a great helper to me. Every week, I'm so eager to meet with her, talk to her, and learn from her. She even opened her family door to me. It was my great pleasure to have Thanksgiving dinner with her family. This was the first time that I was invited to spend holiday with American people here since I came to U.S. five years ago. Nancy, thank you for the delicious turkey, salad, and bread you made and the great gift you bought for me!
I get tremendous help from my tutor - Nancy through her dedicated work. Today, I'm able to sit in the classroom to learn the English 101 composition class in Montgomery Community College as most American college students do with more confidence and even got an "A" in the midterm exam this semester. No doubt, I won't be able to do this last year before we met! At the same time, I would also like to thank all the NLC members for the good efforts you put through to find my tutor and the great learning opportunity you provided to me. I keep telling my Chinese and American friends about this wonderful experience happened to me and I'm pretty sure that the special relationship between Nancy, NLC members, and me will be kept with the time pass on. Now, with all of your help, I'm improving my English quickly, enjoying the wonderful life here, and feeling more confident as a new American.

Like a Morning Glory
Like a morning glory reaching for the sun, he greets me. Arms almost vine like, entangling me in his grasp. His smile lights up my soul as only he can. He caress's my cheek with his warm small fingers. His kiss is as soft as a whisper and as wet as the morning dew in summertime. This is the time of day I cherish most. But like most good things in life, this too, shall pass.
The same sweet, gentle finger which just moments ago was caressing my cheek, is now poking at it. This is his attempt at getting to my eyelids, to see if I'm awake. The silent sweet cuddling is replaced by boundless questions of what the day will bring. The energy he is displaying is more that of a buzzing bee, than an awakening flower.
Our tranquil beginning is now just a lovely memory. As Benjamin shrieks, "I'm hungry, mom. What's for breakfast?"
With a bit of regret I rise to greet a new day. My prayer is that God will grant me the privilege of many more moments, like this one, with my son.
