Becoming
a Tutor
- Sign
up for our Tutor Training Workshops.
- Tutors are
asked to make at least a six-month commitment to tutoring once
they are trained, usually two 1.5 hour sessions per week. Scheduling
is worked out between you and your student.
- You do NOT
need to speak Spanish or another language to tutor English. First
of all, we have students speaking many different languages who
need English help--Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Arabic
just to name a few. Secondly, speaking the student's native language
can actually hinder the student's learning English, because they
might "fall back" on their first language when trying
to express themselves to their tutor instead of trying to communicate
in English.
- Tutors should
plan to tutor in a public place (ex. LCN, local libraries, local
churches) rather than in the tutor's or student's home. You will
be given a library list at your workshop.
