The Literacy Council of Norristown empowers adults to improve literacy skills or learn the English language utilizing trained volunteers and teachers who provide tutoring or classroom instruction at little or no cost to the student.  We collaborate with multiple local organizations to deliver such services without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

The Literacy Council of Norristown was founded in 1984 by a group of dedicated Montgomery County citizens, led by Katharine Dosch, to address the problem of low English literacy in the Norristown area. At that time one in five people in Montgomery County was functionally illiterate.

Since then our organization has grown to meet the ever increasing need for our services.  In 1990, the LCN Board added English classes for speakers of other languages at our home site. In 1998, LCN added a Workplace Literacy Project at an employer site emphasizing basic workplace skills.  Since then we have added other community based literacy projects.
